Lagos State – Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has completed a $2.5 billion private equity placement, in a transaction that values Africa’s largest single train refinery at approximately $40 billion and sets the stage for a planned public listing.

The private placement, reportedly covering up to six per cent of the company, is widely seen as a precursor to what could become Africa’s largest ever initial public offering, with the refinery said to be targeting a listing as early as August.

Industry analysts say the successful completion of the placement reflects growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, coming shortly after the refinery shifted some of its pricing to dollar denominated terms.

The refinery has continued to expand its market influence this year, with its recent pricing changes contributing to rising fuel costs at the pump even as global oil prices remain elevated amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

A successful public listing would mark a major milestone for Nigeria’s capital markets, potentially deepening the Nigerian Exchange and providing a benchmark valuation for one of the continent’s most significant industrial assets.

Dangote has not disclosed the exact date for the planned IPO, though the completed placement suggests preparations for a public offering are now well advanced.
