Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) rescued seven kidnap victims along the Riyom highway in Plateau State. The victims were abducted by armed men while travelling on the busy route.
The kidnappers intercepted vehicles along the highway, forcing passengers into the bush. Security forces, acting on intelligence, launched a swift operation to track the criminals. The troops engaged the kidnappers in a gun battle, leading to the rescue of the victims.
The OPSH Media Information Officer, Major Samson Zhakom, confirmed the rescue. He said the troops acted promptly after receiving distress calls. According to him, the victims were freed without paying ransom and have since reunited with their families.
Major Zhakom assured residents that OPSH remains committed to protecting lives and property in Plateau and neighbouring states. He urged communities to continue providing timely information to security agencies to aid operations.
Authorities reported that the rescued victims were in stable condition. Medical personnel examined them before they were released to their families. The police and military are still pursuing the fleeing kidnappers.
The Riyom highway has witnessed repeated attacks by kidnappers targeting travellers. Residents have raised concerns about safety on the route, calling for increased patrols and surveillance.
Local leaders commended the troops for their swift response. They urged government and security agencies to sustain the momentum against criminal gangs. Civil society groups also called for stronger collaboration between communities and security forces.
Security agencies have intensified patrols along the Riyom highway and surrounding areas. OPSH said it will continue to dismantle criminal hideouts and ensure safe passage for travellers.
