Mustapha Kwankwaso Named NDC Deputy Governorship Candidate in Kano
SHARE

Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of New Nigeria Peoples Party leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was announced as the Nigerian Democratic Congress deputy governorship candidate for Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections, in a development that deepens the emerging political alignment between the Kwankwaso family and Peter Obi’s NDC.

The announcement adds a significant dimension to the NDC’s political strategy for 2027, connecting it to one of the most powerful political dynasties in northern Nigeria at the sub-national level. Kano is expected to be one of the most hotly contested states in the 2027 cycle, with the APC, PDP, NNPP, and now NDC all seeking to establish credible positions in the state.

Political analysts described the Mustapha Kwankwaso nomination as evidence of ongoing, if informal, coalition-building between Peter Obi’s NDC and the Kwankwaso political network, a relationship that had been speculated about since Obi and Kwankwaso were both opposition presidential candidates in 2023. The nomination at the sub-national level could be a precursor to a more formal arrangement at the presidential level ahead of 2027.

However, Rabiu Kwankwaso’s NNPP has not formally aligned with the NDC at the national level, and sources in his camp said the Kano deputy governorship nomination was an individual decision rather than an official party coalition. Some NNPP figures were reported to be cautious about any formal alignment with Obi’s political platform, given the differences in regional constituency and political base.

Furthermore, the NDC’s Kano ambitions face competition from a resurgent APC under Governor Abba Yusuf, who said this week that the party’s recent byepoll performance signalled a strong 2027 position. Still, the combination of the Kwankwaso brand and Obi’s national profile gives the NDC a stronger entry point in Kano than it would otherwise have. Notably, a court separately adjourned a suit challenging Donald Duke’s NDC presidential candidacy, adding another thread of legal uncertainty to the 2027 opposition landscape. Consequently, the NDC is simultaneously building sub-national structures and managing legal challenges as it works toward a competitive 2027 national campaign.
