Nigeria is set for the staging of the 2026 National Trials for the Commonwealth Games, which will hold from 20th to 22nd June 2026 at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Yaba, Lagos. The three-day championship will serve as the official selection event for Nigerian athletes seeking qualification and representation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

AFN confirms mandatory national trials for Nigeria’s Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games team, tightening sprint entry rules and selection criteria. A schedule requirement has been set for athletes to arrive in Lagos on Friday, June 19, ahead of competition, with departures set for Tuesday, June 23.

The trials will evaluate sprinters, jumpers, and throwers against international standards. As a result, only top performers will join the national team.

Notably, coaches will review video footage and timing data to finalize selections. Furthermore, medical staff will screen athletes for injury risks before travel.

Even so, some competitors face challenges in funding travel to Lagos. For instance, rural athletes may lack support for transport and accommodation.

By contrast, the AFN expects strong participation from state teams. Meanwhile, sponsors may provide kits and stipends for selected athletes.

Ultimately, Lagos trials determine who represents Nigeria in Glasgow.
