The Conference of United Political Parties has demanded that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu resign immediately over worsening insecurity and economic hardship across Nigeria. The opposition coalition announced its position on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in Abuja, fully backing the House of Representatives Minority Caucus call for the president to either show stronger leadership or step down.

Acting National Chairman Chief Peter Ameh signed the statement, which said the administration has offered only empty promises to Nigerians struggling for months. The group said any elected official who refuses to produce results should honorably resign, according to the statement read in Abuja.

President Tinubu and his administration must step up immediately to address insecurity, economic hardship, and the general well being of Nigerians, Ameh said. Leadership is not a right but a responsibility, and where this responsibility is not being discharged effectively, the honorable path is resignation, the statement added.

Security Crisis Deepens Across Regions

CUPP accused the Tinubu government of deepening economic hardship, escalating insecurity, and running an administration devoid of empathy, vision or competence. The opposition also raised concern about rising insecurity across the country, especially in the North Central region, where attacks have increased sharply in recent months.

In a related development, the Department of State Services issued a security advisory warning about planned attacks on schoolchildren in Edo State. Intelligence suggests suspected bandits are planning to target schoolchildren, especially in Edo North Senatorial District, according to the advisory signed by B. Agada on behalf of the state director of the DSS.

This alert follows a deadly attack on Government Secondary School in Iluke Bunu, Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The assault killed three people, including a three year old child and the school’s vice principal, Kogi State Commissioner for Information Kingsley Fanwo confirmed on his X page.

CUPP Pushes Change Message

Concluding its statement, CUPP made a rallying call for change in 2027, saying the opposition is ready to present a transformative leader. The coalition said Nigerians never had it this bad under the current administration, and leadership must produce results that make people’s lives better.

The statement urged President Tinubu to heed the call and take immediate, visible steps to reduce suffering nationwide. In a sane clime, any elected official who refuses to produce results of good governance should honorably resign, CUPP declared.
