They took a general. The military has come for them.
Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, launched a major offensive against terrorist and bandit groups in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State on June 14, 2026. The operation, codenamed Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, was triggered directly by the abduction and subsequent death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in bandit captivity on June 13 from complications related to diabetes and hypertension.
What the Operation Involves
According to a statement by the task force’s Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Operation CLEAN SWEEP III is aimed at tracking down and neutralising the specific criminal elements responsible for Abubakar’s abduction, as well as dismantling the wider bandit networks operating in the area. Troops have been destroying criminal hideouts and logistics bases since the operation commenced.
The offensive is not limited to Matazu alone. Troops are operating across adjoining communities where bandit elements are believed to be sheltering or moving. Furthermore, the military has appealed to residents of the affected areas to provide credible and timely intelligence, assuring the public that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality.
The Significance of the Response
The killing of a retired senior military officer in captivity has given Operation CLEAN SWEEP III a weight and urgency that is different from routine anti banditry operations. General Rabe Abubakar was not an ordinary civilian victim. He was a former Director of Defence Information who served for nearly three decades and spoke for the Armed Forces during some of Nigeria’s most difficult security years.
His death has consequently produced a level of institutional anger within the military that is likely to translate into sustained operational intensity. The message being sent by the launch of CLEAN SWEEP III is clear: the abduction and killing of a retired general will not go unanswered.
What Comes Next
Military sources say the operation will continue until all operational objectives are achieved. Those objectives include not just the pursuit of those responsible for Abubakar’s death, but the broader dismantling of criminal networks in Matazu and its surrounding areas.
For the people of Katsina State, the operation arrives against a backdrop of persistent insecurity that has claimed many lives. Abubakar’s death brought national attention. The question now is whether the military response will produce the lasting results that the residents of this region have been waiting for.
