They lost by a single goal. But the performance told a different story.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles fell 2-1 to Portugal in their final June international friendly at the Estadio Dr. Magalhaes Pessoa in Leiria on Wednesday night. Pedro Neto put Portugal ahead in the 23rd minute with a clinical finish. Akor Adams then produced a brilliant individual effort in the 36th minute, bullying his way past defenders to level for Nigeria. However, substitute Francisco Conceicao struck a precise left-footed finish in the second half to seal it for Portugal.
A Night of Milestones
Wednesday was a historic night for Alex Iwobi. The veteran midfielder earned his 100th senior cap for Nigeria — a milestone celebrated before kick-off when match officials presented him with a special plaque. He started the match and played a key role in Nigeria’s performance before being replaced late in the game.
Nigeria lined up without Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, both absent from the June camp. Furthermore, defender Igoh Ogbu missed out due to a suspected Achilles tendon injury. Despite those absences, Chelle’s side gave Portugal a genuine contest.
The Performance That Matters
Nigeria came into the match unbeaten in their last five fixtures. They had beaten Zimbabwe, won the Unity Cup against Jamaica, drawn with Poland, and now matched Portugal for long periods. As a result, the mood in camp is one of cautious optimism rather than disappointment.
Portugal, preparing for a World Cup campaign against DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, had to work hard for their win. That alone says something about where the Super Eagles are heading.
What This June Window Means
The June camp is over. Coach Chelle has tested combinations, given debuts, and built foundations. Furthermore, the Nigeria Football Federation has begun contract extension talks with Chelle — a sign that the federation believes in the project.
The Super Eagles are not at the World Cup. However, after Leiria, they leave Europe with momentum, milestones, and a clear direction. The rebuild is real.
