The ball has not been kicked yet. But Nigeria has already made its mark on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Davido headlined the official FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert on Wednesday, June 10 — the night before the tournament’s opening match. The concert, broadcast to a global audience of hundreds of millions, placed one of Nigeria’s biggest names at the centre of world football’s most celebrated occasion.

Afrobeats has spent the better part of a decade earning its place on the world stage. From Coachella to the Champions League final, Nigerian artists have steadily expanded the genre’s global footprint. Consequently, a FIFA World Cup headline slot is not a surprise to those who have been paying attention. It is the logical next step.

Still, seeing it happen is a different thing entirely. Davido performed to an audience that stretched across every continent. Furthermore, his energy, stagecraft, and command of the crowd reminded a global audience why Afrobeats has become one of the most important sounds in the world today.

It is one of the beautiful ironies of this tournament. Nigeria’s Super Eagles are absent from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, Nigeria’s cultural presence is impossible to ignore.

Burna Boy co-headlined the opening ceremony with Shakira on June 11. Davido headlined the Countdown Concert on June 10. Rema and Ayra Starr feature on the official tournament album. In total, four Nigerian artists are part of the official musical identity of a tournament that 48 nations qualified for but Nigeria did not.

What Nigeria Takes From This

For Nigerians watching at home, Wednesday night was a source of genuine pride. The country’s music industry is performing at a level that football has not yet matched. As a result, many are asking the question: if the music can get here, why can’t the football?

The answer, most agree, lies in investment, structure, and time. But tonight, none of that mattered. Tonight, Davido took the stage, and Nigeria took a bow.
