MONTREAL — Global pop icon Celine Dion has announced her return to singing and live performances, four years after stepping back from the stage due to a rare and debilitating health condition. Daily Nigerian confirmed the announcement on Thursday. The news has generated enormous excitement among her global fanbase including millions in Nigeria who have followed her career for decades.

Dion was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, an extremely rare neurological condition that causes severe muscle spasms and rigidity. The disease had made it impossible for her to perform. She publicly disclosed her diagnosis in 2022 and has been undergoing intensive treatment since then.

In her announcement, Dion said she has been working tirelessly to regain her voice and her physical capacity to perform. She said music has always been her reason for living and that returning to the stage is the realisation of everything she has fought for over the past four years.

A Nigerian Connection

Celine Dion’s music has been deeply embedded in Nigerian popular culture for over three decades. Her songs have been played at weddings, funerals, graduations, and in churches across the country. Songs like My Heart Will Go On, The Power of Love, and Because You Loved Me are part of the Nigerian emotional soundtrack.

Nigerian entertainment commentators said Dion’s return is a reminder of the universal power of music and the human capacity for resilience. Several described her fight against stiff-person syndrome as an inspiration for anyone battling chronic illness.
