ABUJA — Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has publicly warned former President Goodluck Jonathan not to accept the Peoples Democratic Party’s 2027 presidential nomination. Vanguard confirmed Keyamo’s statement on Monday. The minister said accepting the PDP ticket would be a grave mistake that would damage Jonathan’s legacy.
Keyamo said the PDP is using Jonathan’s name to generate political energy without any genuine intention of running a credible campaign. He said the party is deeply divided, legally compromised by its leadership dispute, and would not be able to fund or organise a competitive presidential campaign in 2027.
“I have great respect for former President Jonathan. That is precisely why I am warning him publicly. The PDP ticket is a political trap. Accepting it will end his post-presidential legacy as a respected African statesman and reduce him to another failed presidential candidate,” Keyamo said.
Jonathan’s Continued Silence
Jonathan has still not confirmed or denied his interest in the 2027 race. The Turaki-led PDP faction cleared him by waiver as its sole presidential candidate, but he did not attend the screening or submit his nomination form. His silence continues to fuel speculation about his true intentions.
Keyamo’s warning, coming from a serving APC minister, is being read by analysts as a dual-purpose message. At one level, it is genuine concern from someone who respects Jonathan. At another level, it serves the APC’s interest by discouraging a potentially formidable opposition candidacy from materialising.
Jonathan’s allies said he is carefully considering all options and will make his position known at the appropriate time. They said unsolicited public warnings from APC ministers only confirm that Tinubu’s camp fears Jonathan’s potential entry into the race.
