ABUJA — The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has raised concern over the mental health of Nigerian pilgrims during the 2026 Hajj season. The Nation reported on Tuesday that 50 pilgrims suffered mental disorders during the pilgrimage. NAHCON said the figure represents a troubling increase from previous years.
Officials said the mental disorders ranged from stress-induced confusion and disorientation to more serious episodes requiring sedation and medical isolation. The combination of extreme heat, physical exhaustion, massive crowds, and the emotional intensity of the Hajj experience can trigger acute mental health episodes in vulnerable individuals.
NAHCON said it is reviewing its pre-departure health screening processes in light of the mental health cases. The commission said existing screening primarily focuses on physical health conditions. Mental health assessment before Hajj is not currently a standard part of the clearance process for Nigerian pilgrims.

Mental health awareness in Nigeria remains severely limited. Many Nigerians who suffer from anxiety, depression, or other conditions do not receive diagnosis or treatment. They may be unaware that their mental health status could create risks during the physically and emotionally intense Hajj experience.
Islamic scholars and medical professionals said pre-Hajj mental health screening should be introduced as a formal requirement for elderly pilgrims and those with known stress-related conditions. They said a simple screening conversation with a trained health worker could identify individuals who need additional support before and during the journey.

NAHCON said it will work with the Federal Ministry of Health to develop a mental health component for the pre-Hajj medical clearance process before the 2027 season. It called on state pilgrims welfare boards to also educate intending pilgrims about the importance of mental and emotional preparation alongside physical and spiritual readiness.
