ILORIN — An Islamic cleric has been murdered in Kwara State, triggering widespread grief and outrage among residents. Legit.ng reported the killing on Monday. The cleric’s identity and the specific location of the attack were confirmed by local police, who have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

Community members described the murdered cleric as a respected religious teacher who was known for peaceful interfaith dialogue and community development. His death has sent shockwaves through both Muslim and Christian communities in his area.

Kwara State Police Commissioner said officers have identified suspects and are actively pursuing them. He said the killing will not go unpunished. He urged community members to remain calm and to provide any information that could help locate the perpetrators.

Security in Kwara

Kwara State has experienced escalating security incidents in recent months. Lakurawa terrorists killed two Customs officers in neighbouring Kebbi earlier in May. Armed groups have been active along Kwara’s rural corridors. The murder of a religious leader adds a new and deeply disturbing dimension to the state’s insecurity.

Religious leaders across Kwara issued a joint statement condemning the murder. The statement, signed by both the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in the state, called for calm and urged the government to bring killers to justice swiftly.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said the killing is an attack not just on one individual but on the fabric of Kwara’s peaceful coexistence. He pledged to deploy additional security assets to the affected area and to ensure that the full weight of the law falls on those responsible.
