Makinde Told to Resign as Ogbomosho Captives Enter Third Week
SHARE

IBADAN — Calls for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to resign have intensified as abducted teachers and students from Ogbomosho enter their third week in captivity. Legit.ng reported the mounting pressure on Monday. Critics and opposition figures say the governor’s continued stay in office is an affront to the victims and their families.

The Oriire Local Government attack happened on May 16 when JAS terrorists stormed three schools and abducted pupils, teachers, and other residents. One teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, was killed. Several victims have been rescued following military operations. However, others remain unaccounted for.

The APC in Oyo State was among the voices calling for Makinde’s resignation. Party spokespersons said a governor who cannot protect teachers in their classrooms has no moral authority to continue in office. Teachers unions echoed the call, saying Makinde’s initial response was too slow and too weak.

Makinde Defends Response

Governor Makinde has pushed back against the resignation calls. He said his administration has done everything possible in partnership with federal security agencies to rescue the victims and neutralise the terrorist threat. He said demanding his resignation is a political game that does nothing to help the captives.

Security agencies said operations to rescue remaining captives are ongoing. The DHQ confirmed that JAS terrorists carried out the attack, underscoring that the threat came from a nationally designated terrorist organisation, not a local security failure alone.

However, analysts said Makinde’s 2027 presidential ambitions are being directly damaged by the ongoing crisis. A governor who launched a Reset Nigeria movement on a security and governance platform is now defending himself against accusations of presiding over one of the most traumatic security failures in southwest Nigeria in years.
