LAGOS — Nigerian music superstar Wizkid has become the first African artist in history to reach 11 billion streams on Spotify. The milestone, confirmed by multiple music data tracking platforms, marks another record for the Afrobeats icon and underlines the extraordinary global reach of Nigerian music in 2026.

Daily Nigerian reported the achievement this week. Wizkid, whose full name is Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, has been building his Spotify audience steadily since the platform became a major distribution channel for African music. His 2020 album Made in Lagos and the global hit Essence, featuring Tems, drove massive streaming numbers that have continued to compound year after year.

The 11 billion figure places Wizkid in company usually reserved for global pop superstars from North America, the UK, and Latin America. It represents a fundamental shift in how African music is consumed globally. Afrobeats is no longer a niche genre for diaspora audiences. It is mainstream global music.

The milestone also arrives just weeks after Wizkid and Asake released their joint EP REAL Vol. 1 to massive acclaim and before Wizkid and Asake’s BET Awards Best Group nomination for the project. The combination of record streaming numbers and major awards recognition puts Wizkid at the absolute peak of his career influence.

Nigerian Music’s Streaming Dominance

Wizkid’s 11 billion Spotify milestone is part of a broader Nigerian music streaming surge. Burna Boy, Tems, Davido, and Asake all have streams in the billions. Nigeria is arguably the most productive market for global music streaming growth on the African continent.

The BET Awards 2026 nominations reflect this dominance. Wizkid and Asake earned a joint nomination in the Best Group category for REAL Vol. 1. Tems leads the Nigerian contingent with three nominations including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, the BET Her Award for First, and the Viewers’ Choice Award for Raindance with British rapper Dave.

Burna Boy earned a Best Collaboration nomination for WGFT, his feature on Gunna’s hit single. Wizkid also received individual nominations in Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best International Act. Asake secured a Best International Act nomination in his own right. The full BET Awards ceremony is scheduled for June 28 in Los Angeles.

What This Means for Nigeria

Wizkid’s streaming record is more than a music statistic. It is evidence of Nigeria’s cultural soft power. When a Nigerian artist’s music is being streamed in every country on earth at a rate that makes him the continent’s most listened-to artist by a significant margin, Nigeria’s cultural influence is real, measurable, and growing.

For the Nigerian music industry, the milestone should generate conversations about how more of that streaming revenue can stay in Nigeria. Streaming royalties flow through complex international structures that often leave artists and local industry participants with a fraction of what their streams generate globally. Stronger local collection societies and better international licensing arrangements are needed.

Wizkid has not publicly commented on the 11 billion milestone. His management team acknowledged the achievement in a brief social media post. True to his style, Wizkid let the number speak for itself. Eleven billion listens is a kind of speech that requires no translation.
