Atiku Congratulates Amaechi at 61 as ADC Nomination Crisis Deepens

ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi on his 61st birthday. Atiku’s birthday message arrived on the same day that Amaechi publicly rejected the results of the ADC presidential primary. The timing of the gesture has sparked significant political commentary.

Atiku praised Amaechi in his message, acknowledging his years of public service and wishing him many more years of good health and impactful contribution to Nigeria. He did not directly address the ADC primary controversy in the birthday message.

Political analysts said Atiku’s decision to send a warm birthday message to Amaechi, even as Amaechi publicly challenged a primary that Atiku’s camp reportedly won, is a calculated display of political maturity. It signals that Atiku does not want the primary dispute to permanently damage his relationship with Amaechi.

Amaechi has not publicly acknowledged Atiku’s birthday message. His focus as of Wednesday has been entirely on the primary dispute and his rejection of what he described as concocted results.

Two Political Veterans at a Crossroads

Both Atiku and Amaechi are veteran Nigerian politicians who have navigated multiple political realignments over their careers. Atiku has run for president six times. Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, as governor of Rivers State for two terms, and as a federal minister. Their political paths have intersected repeatedly.

The two men were both members of the PDP before defecting at different times. Amaechi was a key figure in the coalition of governors that switched to the APC in 2015, helping Tinubu and Buhari defeat Jonathan. Atiku later returned to the PDP and ran unsuccessfully against Buhari in 2019 and Tinubu in 2023.

Furthermore, their current dispute within the ADC reflects the difficulty of managing a coalition of political heavyweights who each believe they have a legitimate claim to the presidential ticket. Without a consensus process that all parties genuinely trust, such coalitions inevitably fracture when the primary moment arrives.

What Happens Next

The ADC must resolve its primary crisis before the May 30 INEC deadline. Several possible outcomes exist. The party could agree to rerun the primary under monitored conditions. It could establish an internal appeal process that leads to a negotiated outcome. Or it could proceed with its declared result and face legal challenges from Amaechi’s camp.

Atiku’s birthday message to Amaechi, whatever its political calculation, keeps the door open for continued dialogue between the two camps. If the ADC primary dispute can be mediated through back-channel negotiations, Atiku’s conciliatory gesture may prove to have been strategically valuable.

For the Nigerian opposition at large, the ADC crisis is another damaging development in what has been a chaotic primary season. A united opposition with credible candidates is essential for a competitive 2027 election. The current disarray makes that unity seem increasingly elusive.
