LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a series of significant security breakthroughs in May 2026. The command confirmed the foiling of a kidnap attempt, the neutralisation of four suspected kidnappers, the arrest of 10 criminal suspects, and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and stolen vehicles. The Guardian Nigeria reported the developments on Wednesday.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olanrewaju Ishola commended his officers for the results. He said the breakthroughs reflect improved intelligence-led policing and stronger collaboration between the command and community security structures across the state.
“Our officers are doing extraordinary work under difficult conditions. These results show that with the right intelligence, the right training, and community support, we can significantly reduce crime in Lagos,” Ishola said at a press briefing.
In one of the operations, officers received intelligence about a planned kidnapping and intercepted the suspects before they could carry out the abduction. The would-be victim was secured. Four suspects were arrested at the scene. One attempted to flee and was neutralised when he posed a threat to officers.
Pattern of Criminal Networks
The recovered firearms included locally made pistols and assault weapons. Police said the weapons were linked to armed robbery and kidnapping networks operating in parts of Lagos. The recovery of multiple vehicles points to a coordinated criminal syndicate rather than isolated incidents.
The 10 additional suspects arrested during the month face charges ranging from armed robbery and unlawful possession of firearms to receiving stolen goods. Police said investigations into their networks are ongoing and further arrests are expected.
Furthermore, Lagos’s insecurity challenge continues to evolve. Armed groups that previously operated primarily in rural outskirts have been moving closer to urban centres. The commissioner said the command has repositioned tactical units to counter this shift and is working with the army and DSS on joint intelligence operations.
Community Policing
Ishola credited community policing initiatives with providing the intelligence that led to several of the May breakthroughs. He said residents in several local government areas contacted officers with tip-offs about suspicious activities that led directly to arrests and the foiling of planned crimes.
The command is scaling up its community policing program ahead of the extended holiday period. Officers will be deployed in higher numbers around markets, transportation hubs, and residential areas during the Sallah and Democracy Day break.
Civil society groups in Lagos welcomed the police breakthroughs but urged the command to improve its handling of victims and witnesses. They said many Lagosians who want to provide crime tips are deterred by fear of exposure or retaliation. A stronger witness protection framework, they said, would generate significantly more intelligence and produce even better security outcomes.
