Romance Scammer Ugberaese Extradited to US to Face Trial

LAGOS — Nigerian national Samuel Ugberaese has been extradited to the United States to face charges of romance fraud and money laundering. US authorities allege he targeted elderly American victims through online romance scams, stealing significant sums of money over several years.

The extradition was confirmed by the US Department of Justice and Nigerian law enforcement agencies. Ugberaese was taken to the US after months of legal proceedings in Nigeria. He will face trial in a US federal court. The charges carry potential prison sentences of up to 20 years.

Romance fraud involves criminals posing as romantic partners online to gain the trust of victims. They then request money under false pretenses, claiming emergencies, medical bills, or business needs. Elderly Americans are frequently targeted because they are seen as more trusting and financially stable.

The US Embassy in Abuja expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s cooperation in the extradition. A spokesperson said the case reflects the strength of law enforcement cooperation between the two countries. “We will continue to work with our Nigerian partners to bring fraudsters to justice,” the spokesperson said.

Nigeria’s Fraud Problem

Nigeria has long been associated with internet fraud, commonly known as Yahoo-Yahoo. However, Nigerian authorities have stepped up enforcement in recent years. The EFCC has arrested and prosecuted thousands of internet fraud suspects since 2020.

In addition, Nigeria has signed extradition treaties with several countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. These treaties allow for the transfer of suspects between countries to face trial where their alleged crimes occurred or had the greatest impact.

Furthermore, the EFCC and Nigeria’s Attorney General’s office have been working more closely with international law enforcement agencies to track money flows and identify suspects. Digital forensics now plays a major role in building fraud cases that meet international evidentiary standards.
