Abuja, Nigeria — The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has appealed to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Nigeria to prioritize the remittance of workers’ pensions, stressing that retirement security is a right, not a privilege.
Speaking at a sensitization forum, PenCom officials emphasized that many employees in SMEs risk facing financial hardship in old age due to irregular or non-existent pension contributions. The Commission urged employers to comply with the Pension Reform Act, which mandates pension deductions and remittances for eligible workers.
PenCom highlighted that pensions are not just statutory obligations but a humane safeguard for workers who dedicate their productive years to building businesses. Without proper retirement planning, many employees face uncertainty, especially in a country where family support systems are increasingly strained.

“Every worker deserves dignity after years of service. Pension remittance is the bridge between today’s labor and tomorrow’s security,” a PenCom representative noted.
SMEs account for more than 80 percent of Nigeria’s workforce, making their compliance critical to the success of the pension system. PenCom acknowledged that many small businesses struggle with financial constraints but insisted that pension obligations must be treated as essential, alongside salaries.
By remitting pensions, SMEs not only protect their employees but also strengthen trust and loyalty within their workforce.

The Commission also encouraged workers to actively monitor their pension accounts and demand transparency from employers. Retirement planning, PenCom stressed, should be a shared responsibility between employers, employees, and regulators.
Financial experts at the forum advised SMEs to view pension contributions as investments in human capital rather than burdens. They argued that a secure workforce is more productive and committed.
PenCom pledged to intensify awareness campaigns and strengthen enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance. The Commission is also working on digital solutions to make pension remittance easier for SMEs, reducing paperwork and delays.
For Nigerian workers, the appeal offers hope that their years of service will not end in uncertainty. For SMEs, it is a reminder that sustainable business growth must include safeguarding the future of those who power their enterprises.
