Nigeria, UAE Strengthen Bilateral Relations as Trade Hits $5bn
SHARE

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations as trade between the two nations reached $5 billion.

The review, held in Abuja, brought together senior government officials and business leaders from both countries. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, aviation, and technology.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that the UAE has become one of Nigeria’s key trading partners in the Middle East. “Our relationship with the UAE continues to grow. The $5bn trade volume reflects the strength of our economic ties, but there is room for greater collaboration,” the minister said.

UAE representatives highlighted their interest in expanding investments in Nigeria’s energy, infrastructure, and aviation sectors. They stressed that Nigeria’s large market and strategic position in Africa make it an attractive destination for Emirati investors.

The meeting also addressed challenges in visa policies and air travel between both countries. Officials confirmed that efforts are underway to resolve outstanding issues affecting Nigerian travelers and businesses operating in the UAE.

Analysts say the growing trade volume demonstrates the resilience of Nigeria-UAE relations despite past diplomatic tensions. They argue that both countries stand to benefit from deeper cooperation, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, agriculture, and digital innovation.

Business leaders present at the review called for policies that encourage private sector participation. They noted that while government-to-government ties are strong, expanding business-to-business partnerships will drive sustainable growth.

Civil society groups have urged Nigeria to leverage the partnership to boost local industries. They argue that trade agreements should prioritize value addition in Nigeria rather than reliance on imports.

The UAE delegation assured that their investments would focus on long-term projects that support Nigeria’s development goals. “We see Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa. Our aim is to build lasting economic bridges,” a UAE official stated.

For Nigeria, the review comes at a time when the government is seeking to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment. Officials say the partnership with the UAE aligns with national priorities to strengthen trade, create jobs, and improve infrastructure.

As trade volume continues to rise, both countries are expected to deepen cooperation in key sectors, with the goal of expanding economic opportunities and strengthening diplomatic ties.

The Nigeria-UAE partnership remains one of the most significant bilateral relationships for Nigeria in the Middle East, and the latest review signals a renewed commitment to building on shared interests.
