Former Nigerian football stars have advised the Super Falcons to remain disciplined and focused as they prepare for their upcoming Olympic qualifier.
The advice comes amid growing expectations that the Falcons will deliver strong performances after their impressive outing at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Ex-internationals stressed that while the team has the talent to succeed, mental strength and tactical discipline will be crucial in overcoming their opponents. They warned that complacency could undermine Nigeria’s chances of securing a place at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Speaking on the team’s prospects, former Falcons striker Stella Mbachu said preparation must go beyond physical fitness. “The players must stay focused and avoid distractions. Olympic qualifiers are tough, and every team will be fighting hard,” she noted.
Another ex-player, Maureen Mmadu, emphasized the importance of teamwork. She explained that individual brilliance alone cannot guarantee success. “The Falcons must play as a unit. When they combine their skills with discipline, they can defeat any opponent,” she said.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has assured that the team will receive adequate support ahead of the qualifiers. Officials said arrangements are being made to ensure proper training camps and logistics for the players.

Analysts believe the Falcons’ experience at the World Cup will serve as an advantage, but they caution that Olympic qualifiers present different challenges. Unlike the World Cup, where teams have more time to prepare, qualifiers are often played under pressure with little margin for error.
Fans have also expressed optimism, noting that the Falcons remain Africa’s most successful women’s team. However, they insist that the players must approach the qualifiers with seriousness to avoid surprises.
The Super Falcons have historically struggled to qualify for the Olympics, with their last appearance dating back to Beijing 2008. Ex-players say breaking that cycle should be a major motivation for the current squad.
Civil society groups and sports enthusiasts have called for greater investment in women’s football, arguing that consistent support will help the Falcons maintain their dominance. They say the team’s success inspires young girls across Nigeria and strengthens the country’s image in global sports.
As the qualifiers draw closer, the Falcons are expected to begin intensive training under the supervision of the NFF. The federation has promised to provide the necessary resources to ensure the team is well-prepared.
For now, the message from ex-players is clear: discipline, focus, and teamwork will determine whether the Super Falcons return to the Olympic stage after nearly two decades.
