I Left PDP for Makinde as Governor support Tinubu -Fayose
SHARE

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has revealed that he handed over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, but alleged that Makinde assured him he would not work against President Bola Tinubu.

Fayose made the remarks while speaking on the state of the PDP and his role in the party’s internal dynamics. He explained that his decision to step back from active leadership was to allow Makinde, as the only sitting PDP governor in the region, to take charge of the party’s affairs.

According to Fayose, the PDP in the South-West had become weakened after the 2023 general elections, and he believed it was necessary to give Makinde the space to rebuild. “I left the carcass of the PDP for Governor Makinde. He is the leader in the South-West, and I expect him to take responsibility,” Fayose said.

He further claimed that Makinde had promised not to oppose President Tinubu, stressing that the Oyo governor assured him of cooperation with the federal government. Fayose noted that such an understanding was important for stability in the region, given the political realities after the elections.

Political observers say Fayose’s comments reflect ongoing tensions within the PDP, which has struggled to maintain cohesion since losing the presidential election. The party has faced internal divisions, with some leaders accused of aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for political survival.

Governor Makinde has not publicly responded to Fayose’s claims, but he has previously emphasized the need for collaboration with the federal government to deliver development projects in Oyo State. Analysts suggest that his pragmatic approach may be aimed at balancing party loyalty with governance priorities.

Fayose, known for his outspoken style, has repeatedly criticized the PDP’s national leadership, arguing that the party must undergo reforms to remain relevant. He has also maintained that his political decisions are guided by the need to protect the interests of his state and region.

The development comes as the PDP continues to grapple with questions about its future direction. With defections and internal disputes weakening its base, the party faces challenges in positioning itself as a credible opposition ahead of future elections.

For now, Fayose’s remarks add to the debate about the PDP’s internal struggles and the role of regional leaders in shaping its future. His comments also highlight the broader issue of political realignments in Nigeria, where alliances often shift in response to changing power dynamics.
