Kaduna State University (KASU) has been hit by a wave of resignations, with over 200 lecturers reportedly leaving the institution due to poor welfare conditions and unresolved disputes with management.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) confirmed the development, warning that the situation could lead to an indefinite strike if urgent steps are not taken to address the concerns of academic staff.

ASUU officials explained that the resignations were linked to issues such as poor remuneration, lack of promotion opportunities, and inadequate funding for research. They argued that many lecturers had been forced to seek better opportunities elsewhere, leaving the university struggling to fill critical teaching positions.

“The resignation of over 200 lecturers is a clear indication of the crisis in Kaduna State University. If these issues are not addressed, we may have no choice but to embark on an indefinite strike,” an ASUU representative said.

Students at KASU have expressed worry over the impact of the resignations, noting that classes have already been disrupted. Some departments reportedly face shortages of qualified staff, raising concerns about the quality of teaching and learning.

Education analysts say the mass resignation highlights broader challenges facing Nigeria’s university system, including underfunding, poor infrastructure, and disputes between unions and government authorities. They warn that unless reforms are introduced, more institutions could face similar crises.

The Kaduna State Government has yet to issue a detailed response, but officials previously stated that efforts were being made to improve conditions at the university. However, ASUU insists that promises have not translated into tangible improvements for staff.

Civil society groups have called for dialogue between the government, university management, and ASUU to prevent further disruption. They argue that prolonged strikes or staff shortages will negatively affect students and undermine the state’s education sector.

KASU, established in 2004, has grown into one of the leading universities in Northern Nigeria. However, the recent resignations have raised questions about its ability to sustain academic programmes and maintain standards.

ASUU has reiterated its demand for improved funding, better welfare packages, and respect for agreements reached with the union. The union warned that failure to act could push the university into deeper crisis.

For now, students and parents remain anxious as the possibility of an indefinite strike looms. The situation underscores the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s higher education system to ensure stability and quality learning.
