Over 4,000 Abandoned Mine Pits Discovered in Plateau – Alake
SHARE

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has disclosed that more than 4,000 abandoned mine pits have been identified across Plateau State.

Alake made the revelation during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, stressing that the abandoned sites pose serious environmental and safety risks to communities. He explained that the ministry is working with relevant agencies to address the dangers associated with the pits.

“These abandoned mine pits are not only hazardous to residents but also contribute to environmental degradation. We are committed to finding sustainable solutions,” Alake said.

The minister noted that many of the pits were left behind by illegal miners and companies that failed to comply with regulations. He added that the government is considering measures to reclaim the sites and prevent further illegal mining activities.

Local communities in Plateau have long complained about the dangers of abandoned pits, which often fill with water during the rainy season, creating risks of drowning and contamination. Farmers also report that the pits have reduced available land for agriculture.

Environmental experts warn that abandoned mine sites can lead to soil erosion, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity. They argue that urgent intervention is needed to rehabilitate the affected areas and restore them for safe use.

Alake assured that the ministry is developing a framework for mine reclamation, which will involve collaboration with state governments, private investors, and international partners. He emphasised that mining companies must take responsibility for environmental management as part of their operations.

“The era of exploiting resources without accountability is over. We will enforce strict compliance with mining regulations to ensure that communities are protected,” he stated.

Stakeholders at the meeting called for stronger enforcement of mining laws and more investment in environmental restoration. Civil society groups also urged the government to prioritise community safety and provide alternative livelihoods for residents affected by mining activities.

Plateau State, known for its rich mineral deposits, has witnessed decades of mining activities. However, poor regulation and illegal operations have left behind thousands of dangerous pits, many of which remain unattended.

The ministry’s disclosure is expected to spark renewed debate about the future of Nigeria’s mining sector and the balance between resource exploitation and environmental sustainability.

For residents of Plateau, the abandoned pits remain a daily reminder of the challenges posed by unregulated mining. Authorities say plans are underway to begin reclamation projects, but communities continue to demand urgent action to prevent further tragedies.
