Police in Nigeria have arrested a school teacher accused of setting his wife ablaze during a domestic dispute.

The incident, which occurred in a residential community, left the victim with severe burns. She was rushed to hospital by neighbours who responded to her cries for help. Medical officials confirmed that she is receiving treatment, while police investigations are ongoing.

According to eyewitnesses, the teacher allegedly doused his wife with petrol before igniting the fire. Residents said the couple had been involved in frequent quarrels, though the exact cause of the latest dispute remains unclear.

Local authorities described the act as a serious case of domestic violence. A police spokesperson confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect is in custody and will face charges once investigations are concluded. “We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. The suspect has been arrested, and the case is under investigation,” the spokesperson said.

Community members expressed shock over the incident, calling for stronger measures to address domestic violence. Women’s rights advocates also condemned the act, urging authorities to ensure justice for the victim.

“This is another tragic reminder of the dangers women face in abusive relationships. We call on the government to intensify awareness campaigns and strengthen laws against domestic violence,” a representative of a local NGO said.

Domestic violence remains a widespread challenge in Nigeria, with many cases going unreported due to fear, stigma, or lack of support. Advocacy groups have repeatedly called for improved enforcement of existing laws and better protection for victims.

The incident has sparked renewed debate about the need for community vigilance and early intervention in cases of domestic abuse. Analysts say stronger collaboration between law enforcement, civil society, and healthcare providers is critical to reducing such cases.
