Otor Edo: Delta's Forgotten Clay Goldmine
SHARE

Delta State – While Delta State’s Economic and Investment Summit peaked in Asaba this week with banners and boardroom pitches for a Made in Delta agenda, a remote community about two hours away sits on a resource nobody at the summit is discussing.

Otor Edo, in Ughelli South Local Government Area, holds what residents describe as the state’s finest clay deposits, a resource they say could feed an entire industry if properly harnessed and supported with basic infrastructure.

Community leader Kennedy Oghenerukevwe Egone said Otor Edo’s clay wealth has instead become a source of quiet frustration, with the community lacking even a functioning road or clinic despite sitting on potentially valuable industrial mineral deposits.

Residents say the silence around Otor Edo’s clay potential at high profile investment events reflects a broader pattern of overlooked local resources across Delta State, even as officials court large scale foreign and domestic investment.

Local pottery makers continue to work the clay using traditional methods, producing goods for regional markets even without the industrial investment that could scale production and improve livelihoods across the community.

Community members say they are hopeful that renewed attention on Delta’s investment potential could eventually translate into support for smaller, overlooked resource rich communities like Otor Edo.
