TCN Extends Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Line Outage Until June 30 for OPGW Work
SHARE

ABUJA — The Transmission Company of Nigeria has extended the scheduled maintenance outage on the Jos-Bauchi-Gombe 330kV single-circuit transmission line until June 30, 2026. TCN General Manager of Public Affairs Ndidi Mbah confirmed the extension in a statement on Monday, June 2.

The extension is necessary to allow contractors complete the installation of Optical Ground Wire along the 276-kilometre corridor. OPGW improves both power transmission reliability and provides fibre-optic communication capacity along the transmission line. The work was initially scheduled between April 9 and 12, resumed May 23, and will now continue through June.

Customers of the Yola Electricity Distribution Company and the Jos Electricity Distribution Company will experience limited supply during the maintenance window. The outage is observed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays through Sundays. Cities affected include Bauchi, Gombe, Damaturu, and Maiduguri.

An Upgrade Worth the Disruption

TCN said the OPGW installation is a long-term investment in grid reliability. It said the fibre communication layer built into the line will improve the speed and accuracy of fault detection, reducing the duration of future outages. Residents and businesses in affected states are asked to bear with the temporary inconvenience.

Meanwhile, TCN announced the successful completion of maintenance on the Mando-Kumbotso 330kV transmission line in Kano. The line was restored to service at 4:33 p.m. on May 31. Power supply was also restored to Gazaoua in Niger Republic through the Kano Electricity Distribution Company network.

Energy consumers in the northeast said they welcome the explanation but urged TCN to publish a clear schedule of planned outages well in advance. They said advance notice allows businesses and hospitals to prepare with backup generation rather than facing sudden disruptions without warning.
