Day five of the 2026 FIFA World Cup arrives with some of the tournament’s most anticipated opening group matches. Three African nations are in action today as the competition reaches full stride across North America.
Spain take on Cape Verde at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta at 12pm Eastern Time. Belgium face Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle at 3pm Eastern. And Morocco open their campaign against Scotland later this evening. For Nigerian fans watching the tournament from home, today is a day to cheer loudly for the continent.
Morocco the African Standard Bearer
Morocco carry the heaviest expectations of any African side in this tournament. The Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, defeating Spain and Portugal along the way. Consequently, they arrive in 2026 as the measuring stick for African football.
Their opening match against Scotland is one the continent will follow closely. A strong start would send a message to the rest of the field. Furthermore, it would give the nine other African nations in the tournament a boost of collective confidence.
Cape Verde and Egypt Flying the Flag
Cape Verde face world champions Spain in what is perhaps the toughest opener any African team could receive. Still, the Blue Sharks have become one of Africa’s most consistent national teams in recent years. They do not fear the occasion.
Egypt, meanwhile, meet Belgium in Seattle. The Pharaohs are a proud footballing nation with enormous support. Their squad, built around experienced Premier League and Serie A players, is capable of an upset on the right day. As a result, the match against Belgium is one of the more evenly contested group openers of the day.
Nigeria Watches, Wills and Waits
For Nigeria, these matches carry a bittersweet quality. The Super Eagles are at home. However, ten African brothers are on the world stage and that, for now, is enough to celebrate.
The World Cup group stage runs through June 27. Today, Africa has three more chances to make the world pay attention. The continent is ready.
