ABUJA— The Peoples Democratic Party has cleared Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to contest the 2027 Kogi Central Senatorial election. The party confirmed the development on Thursday following a screening exercise for senatorial aspirants.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who currently serves as senator representing Kogi Central, has been one of the most prominent opposition voices in the Nigerian Senate. Her clearance by the PDP signals that the party intends to field her in the 2027 race.

The senator confirmed her clearance in a statement, describing it as a mandate from the people of Kogi Central. She has previously pledged to continue her advocacy for women’s rights, youth development, and democratic governance in the region.

Akpoti-Uduaghan has faced political and legal battles in recent years. She was at the center of a controversial Senate disciplinary action in 2024 and has remained a subject of political controversy since then. Despite these challenges, she has maintained a strong support base in Kogi Central.

The PDP is looking to consolidate opposition in Kogi State ahead of 2027. The party currently holds a smaller number of legislative seats in the state compared to the ruling APC. Party officials say they are working to increase the PDP’s representation in the state.

Meanwhile, the PDP in Plateau State also confirmed a screening exercise for a gubernatorial aspirant. The party is determined to expand its foothold in north-central Nigeria, a region considered politically competitive.

Political analysts say Kogi State remains a key battleground for the 2027 elections. The state has seen significant political activity in recent months, with multiple parties registering aspirants for various offices.

The ADC, which is emerging as a stronger opposition force, is also expected to field candidates in Kogi State for the 2027 elections. This could make the senatorial race in Kogi Central particularly competitive.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has set a timeline for the 2027 elections, with primaries expected in late 2026 and the main election scheduled for February 2027.
