The biggest World Cup in history began with a home win. Mexico 2. South Africa 0. The Azteca erupted.
Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday, June 11. The result gave the tournament a clean, decisive beginning, with a passionate home crowd of 80,000 witnessing a piece of football history in one of the sport’s most legendary venues.
How Mexico Won
Mexico were the better side throughout. They controlled the tempo, created the more dangerous chances, and converted two of them into goals that the Mexican fans had been waiting years to celebrate. The Azteca, already historic for hosting World Cup matches in 1970 and 1986, now adds a third tournament to its remarkable record.
South Africa arrived as underdogs and played the role. Bafana Bafana created sporadic moments of danger but could not find the finish that would have given their opening campaign a different complexion. Coach Hugo Broos will be disappointed. However, with more matches to come in Group stage play, South Africa’s World Cup is far from over.
The Tournament Is Alive
The opening match result sets the tone for what promises to be the most expansive World Cup in history. With 48 teams competing across three countries, the tournament features nations and stories that have never before appeared on this stage. Smaller nations from Africa, Asia, and the Americas now have a platform that the old 32-team format denied them.
Furthermore, the opening night at the Azteca demonstrated that despite concerns about some reported violent outbursts outside the stadium, the football inside was exactly what the world came to see. The show has begun.
What Africa Is Watching For
For African fans, Day 1 brought both a result, South Africa’s loss, and a story worth following. Nine more African nations will play their first matches over the coming days. Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt carry continental hopes alongside South Africa, Cape Verde, Algeria, Tunisia, Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo, and Ghana.
Nigeria watches from home. However, with ten African representatives on the biggest stage in sport, there is plenty to cheer for. The tournament, for Africa, is wide open.
