Luis Suarez scored twice before academy graduate Preston Plambeck struck a late winner as Inter Miami defeated Chicago Fire 3 2 on Wednesday, spoiling Robert Lewandowski’s Major League Soccer debut.
Miami were without Lionel Messi and fellow Argentine Rodrigo De Paul, who were rested four days after Argentina’s 1 0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Lewandowski, who recently joined Chicago Fire from Barcelona after the Catalan club won the La Liga title, made his first MLS appearance, starting the match and playing 63 minutes before being substituted.
The result left Miami second in the Eastern Conference with 34 points, five behind leaders Nashville, with head coach Guillermo Hoyos saying there was no rush for Messi and De Paul to return to action.
Hoyos said the World Cup takes a significant physical and mental toll on players, adding that Messi and De Paul deserved their rest before returning whenever they were in the right condition.
Lewandowski’s MLS adventure begins with a defeat, though his debut is expected to draw significant attention as the Polish striker looks to make his mark in American soccer.
