LAGOS — Global artificial intelligence infrastructure spending is projected to hit $600 billion in 2026, according to a new industry report. Vanguard confirmed the projection on Wednesday. The figure covers data centres, chips, cloud computing infrastructure, and AI software platforms that are transforming industries worldwide.
The $600 billion projection represents a dramatic acceleration in AI investment. Just three years ago, global AI infrastructure spending was estimated at under $100 billion annually. The exponential growth reflects both the proven commercial value of AI tools and the competitive race among technology giants, governments, and enterprises to secure AI capabilities.
For Nigeria, the global AI investment wave creates both opportunities and risks. Nigerian startups with AI capabilities are attracting increased international investor interest, as demonstrated by the eight Nigerian companies selected for the London Stock Exchange pitch and the four Nigerian AI firms chosen for Google’s accelerator program.
Nigeria’s AI Opportunity
Nigerian universities are being urged to adopt AI for digital governance and teaching. The CBN’s Payment Vision 2028 includes AI-powered financial crime detection. NDLEA is using artificial intelligence to identify drug trafficking patterns. Across sectors, AI is beginning to touch Nigerian institutional operations.
However, Nigeria faces significant barriers to fully capturing the AI opportunity. These include limited computing infrastructure, unreliable electricity that makes data centre operations expensive, and a shortage of AI engineers and data scientists. Bridging these gaps will require deliberate investment and policy support.
Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun’s recent call for Nigerian courts to embrace technology reflects a broader institutional recognition that AI is not optional. The judiciary, healthcare sector, education system, and government administration all have AI adoption opportunities that could dramatically improve efficiency and service delivery if properly implemented.
