President Bola Tinubu on Thursday charged governors from the six northeastern states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe to do more in the face of terrorism and banditry, declaring that Nigeria had stabilised economically and entered what he described as a golden age.
Tinubu gave the charge when he received a delegation of North East political leaders and senior government officials at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Officials who spoke to journalists said the meeting was a formal thank you visit following the President’s decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 general election.
The President’s remarks come as security agencies continue operations across the North East, where insurgency and banditry have persisted despite recent gains, including the rescue of kidnap victims in neighbouring regions.
Tinubu’s characterisation of the country’s economic trajectory as a golden age is likely to draw mixed reactions, given continued public concern over the cost of living and security challenges in several parts of the country.
The North East delegation is expected to continue engaging the Presidency on security and development matters affecting the region in the coming weeks.
