FG Unveils Laptop Credit Scheme to Expand Digital Access
SHARE

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a new Laptop Credit Scheme designed to expand access to digital devices and empower citizens in the country’s growing knowledge economy. The initiative, unveiled in Abuja, is part of broader efforts to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide and equip young people, students, and professionals with the tools needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.

According to Nigerian official sources including Punch Newspapers, Vanguard, and ThisDay, the scheme will allow Nigerians to acquire laptops and other digital devices through flexible credit arrangements. The government explained that the program is targeted at individuals who may not be able to afford outright purchase, thereby democratizing access to technology and supporting digital inclusion.

Speaking at the launch, government officials emphasized that the scheme aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, which prioritizes innovation, digital literacy, and ICT adoption across all sectors. By providing affordable financing options, the initiative seeks to empower students in tertiary institutions, entrepreneurs, and public servants who rely on digital tools for productivity.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy highlighted that the scheme is not just about distributing laptops but about creating a sustainable model for digital empowerment. He noted that access to devices is a critical first step toward building a digitally literate population capable of competing in the global economy.

Officials also stressed that the program would complement ongoing investments in broadband infrastructure and digital skills training. With Nigeria’s internet penetration expanding, the availability of affordable devices is expected to accelerate adoption of e-learning, e-commerce, and e-governance platforms.

Stakeholders in the ICT sector welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention. They argued that while Nigeria has made progress in expanding internet access, the lack of affordable devices remains a major barrier to digital inclusion. The credit scheme, they said, could help millions of Nigerians participate more fully in the digital economy.

Civil society groups also praised the program, noting that it could reduce inequalities in access to education and employment opportunities. For many students, laptops are essential for research, online learning, and skill acquisition. By easing access, the scheme could improve academic performance and enhance employability.

However, analysts cautioned that the success of the initiative will depend on effective implementation. They stressed the need for transparent management, fair credit terms, and partnerships with credible financial institutions to avoid exploitation of beneficiaries. They also urged the government to ensure that the devices provided are of high quality and supported by after-sales services.

The Federal Government assured Nigerians that the scheme would be monitored closely to guarantee accountability and sustainability. Officials added that the program is part of a broader vision to position Nigeria as a hub for digital innovation in Africa.

As the scheme rolls out nationwide, expectations are high that it will not only boost access to digital devices but also catalyze Nigeria’s transition into a knowledge-based economy. For millions of Nigerians, the laptop credit scheme could be the gateway to new opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and global competitiveness.
