One of the leading figures in the African Democratic Congress coalition and a former All Progressives Congress chieftain, Salihu Lukman, has suspended his membership of both the party and the opposition coalition.
Lukman accused former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, of orchestrating hostile treatment and political marginalisation that forced him to quit the coalition he had earlier helped to build.
The departure adds to a growing pattern of internal friction within the ADC coalition, which has struggled in recent weeks with disputes over leadership structure and candidate nomination processes ahead of the 2027 general election.
Lukman had been considered one of the more prominent voices within the coalition, and his exit is likely to raise fresh questions about the ADC’s cohesion as a vehicle for opposition unity ahead of next year’s polls.
El Rufai has not yet publicly responded to the allegations, though the dispute adds to a series of internal disagreements that have dogged the coalition since its formation.
Political observers say the coalition’s ability to resolve such internal disputes quickly will be critical to its credibility as a serious challenger to the ruling APC in the 2027 election cycle.
