LAGOS — Event centers across Lagos are fully booked this weekend as the city’s traditional owambe wedding season reaches its peak, with multiple ceremonies often taking place within the same neighborhood on a single Saturday.

Event planners say June remains one of the busiest months for weddings in Lagos, driven by favorable weather and the timing of school breaks that allow extended families to travel for celebrations.

Vendors supplying aso ebi fabric, catering services and event decoration say demand has risen sharply compared to earlier months. Many small businesses depend heavily on this period for a significant share of their yearly income.

A Lagos based event planner said back to back bookings have become common during peak season. “Some weekends we run three events in different parts of the city. It is tiring, but it is also our busiest and most profitable time,” the planner said.

Beyond the celebrations themselves, the wedding season has become a broader economic engine for Lagos, supporting photographers, makeup artists, musicians and transport services throughout the city.

More Than Just a Party

Sociologists studying Nigerian wedding culture note that owambe events remain an important social institution, reinforcing community ties and extended family networks beyond the couple being celebrated.

As the season continues through the summer months, organizers expect bookings to remain strong, with many venues already reporting reservations extending well into the following weekends.
