The Warning
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has strongly cautioned political parties and their supporters against initiating public campaigns for the 2027 general elections. This rebuke comes as early political activities, including billboard placements and public endorsements, gain momentum across Nigeria.

Legal Framework
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, emphasized that the Commission has not released the official timetable for the 2027 elections. He clarified:

  • No party primaries have been conducted

  • No candidates have been officially nominated

  • The campaign period legally begins 150 days before elections

Key Provisions Cited
Oyekanmi referenced specific sections of the Electoral Act 2022:

  1. Section 94(1): Campaigns must start 150 days before elections

  2. Section 95(1): Campaigns must follow INEC’s regulations

Current Situation
Despite these clear rules, political activities have surged, with:
→ Early billboard installations
→ Unofficial candidate endorsements
→ Premature political statements

INEC’s Position
The Commission had previously addressed this issue during its last quarterly meeting with political parties. INEC now expects full compliance with electoral laws to maintain order in the political process.

Why This Matters
Early campaigns can:
• Distort the electoral process
• Create unfair advantages
• Increase political tensions prematurely

Next Steps
INEC plans to:

  • Monitor compliance closely

  • Engage parties in further discussions

  • Take action against violations

Expert Insight
Electoral law specialists warn that disregarding campaign timelines could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process and set dangerous precedents for future elections.
