Army Arrests Five Suspected Bandit Informants in Niger State

It was not just an arrest. It was a discovery.

Nigerian Army troops arrested five suspected bandit informants in Niger State on June 6, 2026. The suspects were caught during separate operations along the Doro axis in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area. However, what made this arrest significant was what was found on one suspect’s phone.

What the Troops Found

Among the five suspects, three were arrested near Kainji Lake National Park — an area authorities believe is being used as a corridor by bandit groups. According to a military statement, the suspects had been deployed as reconnaissance elements to gather intelligence on a military cantonment.

Furthermore, one suspect’s Android phone contained a deeply disturbing image — a photograph of a beheaded individual, dated May 2, 2026. Authorities say the image suggests possible links to terrorist activities, not just banditry. The discovery has intensified the investigation.

What Was Recovered

Troops recovered two mobile phones, a motorcycle, and N86,100 in cash from the suspects. All five individuals are currently in custody and undergoing further questioning. Military authorities say they are also working to identify and track other members of the suspected network.

The Broader Security Picture

This operation is part of Nigeria’s wider counterinsurgency and anti-banditry efforts in the North-West and North-Central regions. In 2025, operations under Operation Fansan Yamma led to the neutralisation of 305 bandits, the recovery of 189 AK-47 rifles, and the rescue of over 1,000 kidnap victims.

Still, as these arrests show, the intelligence war against armed groups is as important as the kinetic one. Capturing informants reduces the enemy’s ability to anticipate military movements. As a result, the army says this kind of intelligence-driven operation will continue as a priority.
