LAGOS — Samuel Ogazi has been named Nigeria’s standout sports story of May 2026 by multiple local and international athletics publications. The 19-year-old University of Alabama sprinter achieved what no Nigerian athlete has done in a single month: break a 39-year-old national record and defend an NCAA championship title.
Ogazi’s world-leading 44.02 seconds earlier in May shattered Innocent Egbunike’s 1987 national record. He followed it up with a 44.07 second performance to retain his NCAA 400m title at the championships in Eugene, Oregon. Both times rank among the fastest 400m performances by any collegiate athlete in history.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria President Tonobok Okowa said Ogazi has restored pride in Nigerian track and field. He said the federation is working with Ogazi’s management to plan his participation at the World Athletics Championships later in 2026.
A Star Rising Fast
Athletics analysts said Ogazi’s development pace is extraordinary. He reached the final of the 400m at the 2024 Paris Olympics at age 18. He won his first NCAA title in 2025. He broke the national record and defended his NCAA title in 2026. Each milestone has come faster than the one before.
The sub-44 second barrier remains Ogazi’s publicly stated target for the 2026 season. His 44.07 at the NCAA Championships showed he is consistently operating in that range. Several European summer athletics meetings have offered appearance fees to bring him to their events between now and the World Athletics Championships.
Nigerian students and young athletes have embraced Ogazi as an inspiration. His story, from Kaduna to the University of Alabama to world-leading performances, is being used by sports educators and youth advocates to encourage Nigerian children to take athletics seriously as a viable career path.
