Rangers' NPFL Title Win Could Spark Nigerian Club Football Revival

LAGOS — Enugu Rangers’ dramatic final-day NPFL title victory has generated enormous national pride and renewed conversations about the potential of Nigerian club football. Channels Television, in an editorial analysis published on Tuesday, said the Flying Antelopes’ ninth league title could become the spark that reignites belief in what Nigerian club football can achieve.

Rangers clinched the title on the final day of the 2025/2026 season with a 2-1 win over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored both goals in a performance that will be celebrated in Enugu State for years. The win came as Rivers United, their closest rivals, were held to a draw elsewhere.

Channels said the Rangers victory demonstrates that Nigerian clubs can still produce moments of genuine drama and sporting excellence that capture national attention. The final-day climax, with thousands of Rangers fans travelling to Lagos for the decisive match, showed that passion for domestic football remains strong when the stakes are high.

Rangers coach Fidelis Ilechukwu said his team’s achievement should inspire other clubs and the governing bodies to invest more seriously in Nigerian club football. He said the NPFL has the potential to be one of Africa’s premier leagues if it receives the institutional support it deserves.

The Remo Stars Contrast

The contrast with Remo Stars’ shocking relegation adds depth to the story. The defending champions were relegated on goal difference after finishing level on points with Kwara United. It is the first time in Nigerian football history that a team has been relegated in the season immediately following winning the championship.

Remo Stars owner Kunle Soname had invested significantly in building a modern, professionally run club. Their relegation raises difficult questions about the volatility of Nigerian football and whether even well-run clubs can sustain success in a league environment with limited financial depth and significant logistical challenges.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Professional Football League’s refereeing standards, fixture scheduling, and broadcast infrastructure remain areas of significant concern. Without improvements in these areas, even dramatic moments like Rangers’ title win struggle to attract the sustained mainstream attention that the league needs to grow its audience and commercial value.

Looking Ahead

Rangers will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League next season. Their performance in continental competition will be closely watched. Nigerian clubs have had a mixed track record in African club competitions in recent years. A strong showing from Rangers would boost the credibility of the NPFL brand.

The NFF and NPFL said they are working on a five-year development plan for Nigerian club football that includes improving stadium standards, increasing prize money, and developing a robust youth league system that feeds talent into the top flight.

For now, Rangers fans are celebrating what has been a remarkable season. Their club’s ninth title is a reminder that Nigerian club football, despite its challenges, can still produce stories that matter and moments that unite communities across the country.
