WARSAW — Nigeria’s Falconets are putting in intense training sessions at their base in Poland as the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup approaches. Head coach Bankole Olowookere said the squad is mentally and physically ready for what promises to be a tough group stage featuring defending champions Spain and a strong Chinese team.

Olowookere held a press conference on Tuesday in which he expressed confidence in his squad’s preparation. He said the team’s training sessions have focused on tactical discipline, set pieces, and the physical conditioning needed to compete against European opponents who will have home-advantage support from the European football culture.

“We know Spain are the defending champions. We know China are experienced. But we are not here to make up the numbers. Every player in this squad believes we can advance from the group stage and go deep in this tournament,” Olowookere said.

The Falconets’ preparations have been boosted by positive team spirit. Players from different parts of Nigeria have gelled quickly in camp, coaches said. The togetherness of the squad was evident during the qualifying campaign against Malawi, which Nigeria won 2-0 on aggregate in dominant fashion.

The Spain Challenge

Spain are the reigning FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup champions. They play a technically sophisticated, possession-based style of football that rewards patience, movement, and technical quality. Facing them in the opening group game is a significant challenge, but also an opportunity for Nigeria to make an immediate statement.

Olowookere said he has studied Spain’s recent matches extensively. He said Nigeria’s physical strength, direct play, and pace in transition are qualities that can cause problems for even the best possession teams in the world. He said the Falconets will not sit back and concede possession without a fight.

Furthermore, Olowookere said the NFF has provided good logistical support for the campaign. Accommodation, training facilities, and match preparation have all been well organised. He thanked the federation for ensuring the team arrived in Poland properly prepared rather than scrambling for basics upon arrival.

Super Falcons and Broader Context

The Falconets’ World Cup campaign comes as Nigeria’s women’s football program enters one of its busiest periods. The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s team, are preparing for upcoming international fixtures. The Flamingos, the U17 team, have their own qualifying campaign ahead.

Nigerian women’s football stakeholders said the Falconets’ World Cup appearance is an opportunity to showcase the quality of talent the country produces and to inspire the next generation of girls to pursue football professionally. Several players in the current Falconets squad are already attracting attention from European clubs.

The tournament begins in the coming days. Nigeria’s fans back home are following the Falconets’ preparations closely on social media. There is genuine national excitement about the team’s prospects. Olowookere said he wants his players to embrace that excitement and use it as positive energy when they step onto the pitch against Spain.
