Uzodinma: Nigeria’s Democracy Needs a Strong Opposition Now

OWERRI — Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has broken ranks with his APC colleagues to issue a stark warning about Nigeria’s democratic health. He said the country’s democracy is at serious risk if the opposition remains weak and fragmented going into the 2027 general elections.

Uzodinma made the statement on Saturday, the same day President Tinubu swept the APC presidential primary across all 36 states. The timing makes the warning particularly notable, coming from a sitting APC governor who is simultaneously part of the party celebrating that primary victory.

“Nigerian democracy is at risk without a strong opposition. A vibrant opposition is not a threat to good governance, it is a requirement for it. Without one, there is no check on power, no accountability, and no genuine choice for voters,” Uzodinma said.

His statement has drawn widespread attention and mixed reactions. Some opposition politicians praised the governor for speaking an uncomfortable truth about Nigerian politics. APC insiders privately expressed irritation at what they described as an unnecessary distraction on a day of party celebration.

Why the Warning Matters

Nigeria’s opposition is currently deeply fragmented. The ADC is struggling to hold its coalition together after the exits of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. The PDP remains split between rival factions fighting for control of the party structure. Labour Party has not yet declared a clear presidential candidate.

In this environment, Tinubu’s APC dominates the political landscape to a degree not seen since the PDP’s own dominance in the early 2000s. The APC controls 29 governorships, majorities in both chambers of the National Assembly, and significant influence over state legislatures across the federation.

Uzodinma’s warning echoes similar calls from elder statesmen, civil society leaders, and international observers. A credible democracy requires genuine competition. Without it, voters have no meaningful alternative and accountability weakens over time.

What Can Be Done

Political analysts say the opposition has a narrow window before the 2027 campaigns begin in earnest. If key figures like Atiku, Obi, and Makinde can reach a workable agreement on a unity candidate, they could present a credible challenge to Tinubu. If they cannot, the APC is likely to win a second term comfortably.

Uzodinma did not suggest that the APC should help the opposition build itself up. His point was more philosophical, that Nigeria’s long-term democratic health depends on competition. He said he makes the statement as a Nigerian first and a politician second.

The governor is widely seen as a pragmatic politician with an eye on his own future beyond the Imo governorship. Some analysts say his statement positions him as a statesman with national vision, a carefully calibrated move for someone who may have ambitions beyond his current office.
