ILORIN — A court in Kwara State has remanded Peoples Democratic Party spokesperson Olusegun Adewara in custody over alleged defamatory statements against the state government. The arrest and remand order have triggered strong condemnation from the PDP and press freedom groups.
Adewara was arrested earlier this week after making public statements that the Kwara State Government described as false and damaging to its reputation. Authorities obtained a court order remanding him in custody. He was denied bail at the initial hearing.
The PDP in Kwara State condemned the arrest as politically motivated. The party described it as an attempt by the ruling APC state government to silence opposition voices ahead of the 2027 elections. PDP leaders called for Adewara’s immediate release.
“This is a gross abuse of state power. Olusegun Adewara was only doing his job as a party spokesperson. His arrest is a direct attack on freedom of speech and political opposition in Kwara State,” PDP state chairman Kola Shittu said in a statement.
Legal and Press Freedom Concerns
The Nigerian Press Council and several civil society organisations also condemned the remand. They described the use of defamation charges to silence political critics as a dangerous trend. They urged the Kwara State Government to drop the charges and free Adewara immediately.
Legal experts note that defamation in Nigerian law requires the complainant to prove that false statements were made, that they were published to a third party, and that they caused harm to reputation. Political statements made by party officials as part of their official duties often enjoy some protection under freedom of expression principles.
Furthermore, the Atiku Abubakar lobby firm in Washington recently cited similar patterns of arrests of government critics as evidence of democratic backsliding in Nigeria. The Kwara case adds to a growing list of incidents that opposition groups are using to build that narrative internationally.
Government Position
The Kwara State Government has not made a detailed public statement on the specific allegations against Adewara. Government spokespersons said the matter is before the court and that the judicial process should be allowed to proceed without political interference.
However, opposition politicians say the timing of the arrest, weeks before INEC’s May 30 primary deadline and less than 18 months before the 2027 general elections, makes it impossible to separate the legal action from political calculation.
Adewara’s legal team is preparing an application for bail. If granted, he will be released pending trial. Press freedom groups say they will monitor the case closely and provide legal support to ensure that his rights are protected throughout the judicial process.
