ABUJA, May 17, 2026 — Emergency rescue teams in the Federal Capital Territory pulled 16 survivors from the debris of a collapsed building by Saturday evening. The FCT Emergency Management Department announced the recovery late Saturday.
Officials did not give the exact location of the collapse as of Sunday morning. However, the department confirmed that search and rescue operations continued through the night. Teams worked to clear rubble and check for additional survivors.
FCT Emergency Management Director Nkechi Omeife praised the efforts of rescue teams. “Our men worked tirelessly through the night. Every life we save matters,” Omeife said in a statement released Saturday evening.
The department has not confirmed whether any deaths occurred in the incident. Further details on the number of occupants and the cause of the collapse are expected in a full briefing Sunday.
A Recurring Crisis
Building collapses remain a serious problem across Nigeria. Weak enforcement of building codes, use of substandard materials, and illegal construction are key causes. Lagos, Abuja, and other major cities have all recorded multiple collapses in recent years.
In 2025 alone, several buildings collapsed in Lagos and Abuja, killing dozens. Furthermore, the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria has repeatedly called on state and federal governments to enforce construction standards more strictly.
The National Emergency Management Agency has also called on local governments to inspect old and poorly built structures in their areas. Many buildings in Nigerian cities were built without proper permits or engineering oversight.
Government Action
The FCT Administration has promised a full investigation into the latest collapse. Officials say they will identify the building’s owners and determine whether the structure had proper approval from planning authorities.
Consequently, the administration has urged residents to report unsafe buildings to local planning offices. It also warned developers that building without proper permits will result in prosecution and demolition of illegal structures.
Rescue operations are expected to formally conclude Sunday morning. Survivors have been taken to area hospitals for medical attention. The Red Cross and other humanitarian groups are providing support to affected families.
