TUC Urges Government to Create Jobs, Ensure Wealth Distribution

Abuja, Nigeria — The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged the Federal Government to prioritise the creation of decent jobs and ensure fair distribution of national wealth as part of efforts to address the growing hardship faced by Nigerians.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, TUC leaders stressed that rising inflation, unemployment, and unequal access to resources have worsened living conditions for workers and their families. They argued that government policies must focus on inclusive growth rather than benefiting only a few.

The union noted that while Nigeria remains rich in natural and human resources, many citizens continue to struggle with poverty and job insecurity. “We cannot continue with a system where wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few while the majority face hardship. Decent jobs and fair distribution of wealth are essential for stability,” a TUC official said.

According to the union, decent employment opportunities would not only reduce poverty but also strengthen productivity and national development. They emphasised that workers deserve fair wages, safe working conditions, and access to social protection.

The TUC also called for stronger accountability in government spending, urging leaders to ensure that public funds are directed toward projects that benefit ordinary Nigerians. They highlighted the need for investment in infrastructure, education, and healthcare as key drivers of equitable growth.

Labour analysts say the union’s demands reflect wider concerns about Nigeria’s economic structure, where wealth distribution remains uneven despite reforms. They argue that addressing inequality is critical to reducing social tension and fostering national unity.

Civil society groups have echoed the TUC’s call, warning that failure to address unemployment and inequality could fuel unrest. They urged the government to work closely with labour unions to design policies that balance economic reforms with social justice.

The Federal Government has acknowledged the challenges, pointing to ongoing initiatives aimed at job creation and poverty reduction. Officials cite programmes in agriculture, technology, and small business support as part of efforts to expand opportunities.

However, the TUC insists that more needs to be done to ensure that these initiatives reach the grassroots. “Policies must translate into real benefits for workers and communities. We want fairness, not promises,” the union stated.
