Banks Generate 92% of NFIU Suspicious Transaction Reports
SHARE

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has disclosed that banks are responsible for 92 percent of suspicious transaction reports filed in the country, underscoring the central role of financial institutions in detecting and curbing illicit financial activities.

The revelation was made during a recent compliance forum in Abuja, where NFIU officials highlighted the importance of banks in Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing framework.

According to the agency, the high percentage reflects the volume of transactions processed by banks and their frontline role in monitoring unusual financial activities. Suspicious transaction reports (STRs) are filed when institutions detect irregular patterns that may indicate fraud, money laundering, or other financial crimes.

NFIU Director, Modibbo R. Hamman-Tukur, explained that the reports are critical for intelligence gathering and investigations. “Banks remain the largest contributors to suspicious transaction reports because of their exposure to diverse financial dealings. Their vigilance is essential in protecting Nigeria’s financial system,” he said.

The agency noted that while banks dominate STR filings, other sectors such as insurance, capital markets, and designated non-financial businesses also play a role, though their contributions remain comparatively low.

Financial analysts say the figures highlight both progress and challenges in Nigeria’s fight against financial crime. On one hand, banks’ compliance structures are increasingly active in reporting suspicious activities. On the other, the limited participation of other sectors raises concerns about gaps in monitoring.

Experts argue that expanding compliance awareness beyond banks is crucial. “Real estate, law firms, and other non-financial businesses can be exploited for money laundering. Strengthening reporting obligations across these sectors will improve Nigeria’s overall financial integrity,” one analyst noted.

The NFIU has urged institutions to continue improving their compliance systems, stressing that timely reporting helps law enforcement agencies track illicit funds and prevent criminal networks from exploiting the financial system.

In recent years, Nigeria has faced international scrutiny over its anti-money laundering measures. Strengthening suspicious transaction reporting is seen as vital to meeting global standards and avoiding sanctions from international watchdogs.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has also emphasised the need for banks to maintain robust compliance frameworks. Officials say collaboration between regulators, banks, and the NFIU is key to safeguarding the financial sector.

Observers note that the dominance of banks in STR filings reflects their capacity and resources compared to smaller institutions. However, they caution that over-reliance on banks alone could leave loopholes in other parts of the financial ecosystem.

For the NFIU, the next phase involves expanding training, awareness, and enforcement across industries to ensure that suspicious activities are detected wherever they occur.

As Nigeria continues to strengthen its financial intelligence system, the role of banks remains central, but broader participation from other sectors will be critical in building a more resilient and transparent economy.
