Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, as his running mate for the 2027 elections.

The decision, revealed during a political gathering in Ibadan, has drawn attention across Nigeria’s political landscape, given Daura’s background in national security and intelligence.

Makinde explained that his choice was influenced by Daura’s extensive experience in security and governance. He noted that Nigeria’s current challenges, including insecurity and economic instability, require leaders with proven expertise in managing complex national issues.

“Lawal Daura brings decades of experience in national security. His knowledge will be vital as we work to strengthen governance and protect our people,” Makinde said.

Daura, who served as DSS Director-General between 2015 and 2018, is remembered for his role in intelligence operations and national security management. His entry into frontline politics marks a significant shift from his career in public service.

Analysts believe Makinde’s choice signals a strategic move to broaden his appeal beyond Oyo State and strengthen his national profile. By selecting a figure with a strong security background, Makinde may be seeking to reassure voters about his ability to address Nigeria’s pressing security concerns.

Observers also note that the decision could reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, as Daura’s northern roots may help balance regional representation on the ticket.

Political stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions to the announcement. Supporters argue that Daura’s expertise will add credibility to Makinde’s campaign, while critics question whether a former intelligence chief can transition smoothly into partisan politics.

Civil society groups have urged both candidates to focus on policies that address insecurity, unemployment, and economic reforms, stressing that Nigerians are more concerned with solutions than political symbolism.

Makinde’s announcement comes at a time when political parties are intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections. The choice of running mates is seen as a critical step in shaping campaign strategies and building voter confidence.

Daura’s inclusion highlights the growing trend of technocrats and former public officials entering politics, reflecting the demand for expertise in governance.

Governor Makinde’s decision to name Lawal Daura as his running mate underscores the intersection of security and politics in Nigeria’s democratic process. As campaigns gather momentum, the pairing is expected to spark debate on leadership, competence, and the future direction of the country.
