President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced plans to publish a detailed account of how funds saved from the removal of fuel subsidy have been utilised, in a move aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in government spending.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the president assured Nigerians that the administration is committed to ensuring that the savings directly benefit citizens through investments in infrastructure, social welfare, and economic development.

Ngelale explained that the publication will provide a breakdown of allocations and expenditures, showing how the government has channelled the funds into priority areas.

“The president has directed that Nigerians must see clearly how the subsidy savings are being applied. This is about transparency, accountability, and building trust,” Ngelale said.

The decision to make the report public comes amid growing calls from civil society organisations and economic analysts for clarity on how the government is managing the subsidy savings.

Observers note that the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023 was one of Tinubu’s most significant economic reforms, freeing up billions of naira that were previously spent on subsidising petrol.

Government officials have hinted that part of the savings has been directed towards infrastructure projects, including road construction and energy development. Other allocations reportedly target social investment programmes designed to cushion the impact of subsidy removal on vulnerable Nigerians.

Ngelale stressed that the government’s priority is to ensure that the funds are used to improve living standards and stimulate economic growth.

Analysts believe that publishing the expenditure report will help strengthen public confidence in the administration’s economic policies. Transparency, they argue, is critical to ensuring that citizens understand the benefits of subsidy removal.

Civil society groups have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a step towards open governance. They urged the government to make the report accessible and easy to understand for ordinary Nigerians.

The move also reflects Tinubu’s broader economic agenda, which includes fiscal reforms, investment in critical sectors, and efforts to stabilise the naira. By showing how subsidy savings are being spent, the government hopes to counter criticism and demonstrate tangible results.

President Tinubu’s directive to publish the report on fuel subsidy savings marks a significant step in promoting transparency in governance. Nigerians are expected to gain clearer insights into how the funds are being used to drive development and improve welfare.
