Northwest DSS Directors Step Up Fight Against Terrorism, Banditry

Directors of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria’s Northwest region have intensified efforts to tackle terrorism and banditry, reaffirming their commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

The directors met recently to review security strategies across the region, which has been one of the hardest hit by violent attacks, kidnappings, and banditry in recent years. The meeting focused on strengthening intelligence gathering, improving coordination, and enhancing collaboration with other security agencies.

A senior DSS official explained that the directors agreed to adopt more proactive measures to counter emerging threats. He noted that the service is prioritising intelligence-led operations to disrupt criminal networks before they strike.

“Our focus is on prevention. We are working closely with communities and other stakeholders to ensure that terrorists and bandits do not find safe havens in the Northwest,” the official said.

The DSS directors stressed that intelligence remains the backbone of effective security operations. They highlighted the importance of community engagement, urging residents to share timely information that could help security agencies respond quickly to threats.

They also pledged to strengthen collaboration with the military, police, and other law enforcement agencies to ensure a coordinated response to insecurity.

The Northwest has faced persistent challenges from armed groups, with states such as Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and Sokoto recording repeated incidents of banditry and terrorism. The DSS directors acknowledged these realities and assured that the service is adapting its strategies to meet the evolving nature of the threats.

They noted that the service is deploying more resources to rural and border communities, where criminal groups often operate.

The directors emphasised that security cannot be achieved without the active involvement of citizens. They encouraged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organisations to work with the DSS in promoting peace and security.

They assured that the service would continue to protect whistleblowers and informants, recognising their role in exposing criminal activities.

The DSS directors concluded that the fight against terrorism and banditry requires sustained vigilance, innovation, and cooperation. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the Northwest and ensuring that peace and stability return to the region.
