US, Nigeria Renew Security Cooperation Talks in Washington

The United States and Nigeria have held fresh high-level security talks in Washington, focusing on strengthening cooperation in counter-terrorism, military assistance, and regional stability.

The meeting, which brought together senior officials from both countries, is part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral relations and address shared security challenges.

Nigeria’s delegation was led by senior defence and security officials, while the U.S. team included representatives from the Department of State and the Department of Defense. Discussions centred on combating terrorism, tackling organised crime, and enhancing military training and intelligence sharing.

Officials said the talks also reviewed progress made under existing defence agreements and explored new areas of collaboration. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together to address threats posed by extremist groups in West Africa, including Boko Haram and Islamic State affiliates.

A statement from the U.S. government described Nigeria as a “strategic partner” in Africa, noting that stability in the region is critical to global security. The U.S. pledged continued support for Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its armed forces and improve border security.

Nigeria’s representatives emphasised the importance of international cooperation in addressing insecurity, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin and other conflict-prone areas. They highlighted the need for more resources to support displaced communities and rebuild areas affected by violence.

Analysts say the renewed talks reflect Washington’s recognition of Nigeria’s role as a key player in regional peace and security. The discussions also come at a time when both countries are seeking to expand economic and diplomatic ties.

Civil society groups have welcomed the engagement, urging both governments to ensure that agreements translate into practical measures that improve safety for ordinary citizens. They stressed that beyond military support, attention must be given to governance, development, and human rights.

The talks are expected to pave the way for further cooperation in areas such as cybersecurity, maritime security, and intelligence sharing. Officials confirmed that follow-up meetings will be held to monitor progress and implement agreed strategies.

For Nigeria, the partnership offers an opportunity to strengthen its fight against insecurity while building trust with international allies. For the U.S., it reinforces its presence in Africa and commitment to supporting democratic partners.
