Google Selects Six Nigerian News Creators for AI
SHARE

Global technology giant Google has announced the selection of six Nigerian news creators for its newly launched programme designed to boost artificial intelligence adoption and enhance digital revenue growth in the media sector.

The initiative, part of Google’s broader support for journalism in Africa, aims to equip selected participants with advanced tools, training, and resources to strengthen their digital operations and improve sustainability in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

According to Google, the programme will provide tailored mentorship on AI-powered content strategies, audience engagement, and monetisation models. The selected Nigerian creators will join a cohort of participants from other regions, reflecting Google’s commitment to supporting diverse voices in global news ecosystems.

A statement from Google’s regional office explained that the programme is designed to help newsrooms and independent creators adapt to technological changes while maintaining editorial integrity. It noted that AI tools could assist in streamlining workflows, improving fact-checking, and expanding reach across digital platforms.

“We believe that supporting news creators with innovative technology and sustainable revenue models is essential for the future of journalism,” Google said. “This programme will empower participants to leverage AI responsibly while building stronger connections with their audiences.”

Industry observers say the inclusion of Nigerian creators highlights the country’s growing influence in Africa’s digital media space. Nigeria has one of the continent’s largest online readerships, and its news platforms are increasingly adopting digital-first strategies to meet audience demand.

The programme also comes at a time when many media organisations face challenges related to declining advertising revenue and the need to diversify income streams. By focusing on AI and revenue growth, Google hopes to provide practical solutions that can help news creators remain competitive and financially viable.

Media analysts have welcomed the initiative, noting that it could help bridge gaps in technology adoption among smaller newsrooms and independent publishers. They argue that access to training and resources will be critical in ensuring that AI tools are used ethically and effectively.

The six Nigerian participants, whose names were not immediately disclosed, are expected to undergo intensive training sessions and collaborative projects over the coming months. The programme will also connect them with global experts and peers to share best practices and innovative approaches to digital journalism.

Google has previously supported African media through initiatives such as the Google News Initiative (GNI) and partnerships with fact-checking organisations. This latest programme builds on those efforts, with a stronger focus on AI integration and long-term revenue sustainability.

As the digital media environment continues to evolve, the success of such initiatives may determine how well African news creators adapt to new technologies while maintaining credibility and trust with their audiences.
